KONG SHEN NIAO YU

Modern-era musician Tianhua Liu ingeniously drew inspiration from Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei's poem The Deer Enclosure, which includes the line: "In pathless hills no man's in sight, but I still hear echoing sound."

Liu transformed the “echoes of human voices” into “the sounds of birds” in his erhu piece Birdsong in a Desolate Mountain (Kongshan Niaoyu).

The “empty mountain” here refers to Huangshan in Jiangyin, Jiangsu — Liu’s hometown — where dense bamboo forests and flourishing nature create an environment filled with birdsong and flowers. Through music, she vividly depicts a scene of countless birds singing in the deep, tranquil valleys of the mountains.
