Wind Through the Pine Trees

The title of the piece is drawn from the guqin composition “Wind in the Pines” (Feng Ru Song), traditionally attributed to Ji Kang of the Wei–Jin period, and later adopted as the name of a ci poetic tune pattern. The production team chose this title to evoke Zhang Guoli’s narrative style—like wind moving through a pine forest, waves rising in succession—flowing gently into the ear and the heart. It reflects both the depth of history and a natural, rhythmic resonance.
In his composition, Guan Dazhou blends traditional and modern elements. Rooted in the aesthetic spirit of the guqin, he incorporates driving electronic rhythms and symphonic orchestration to create a listening experience that is at once classical and dynamic, aligning with the program’s vision of “bringing cultural relics to life.”
In our performance, we continued this concept by rearranging the piece for yangqin, zhongruan, pipa, erhu, and bamboo flute, allowing the work to generate a unique musical chemistry.
